The SWAN system is a comprehensive, holistic strategy to measure, with integrity, agricultural sustainability on farms. It uses various measures of soil, water, atmosphere and nutrients to formulate an index for each aspect, as well as a total SWAN index for each farm. The first time the SWAN index is measured on a farm provides the baseline for that farm, against which future progress can be compared. The idea of the system is to observe the extent to which management practices that a farmer adopts are contributing to the sustainability of the agroecosystem.
